INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
(approx. 235g)
  • ¾ cup Whole Milk
(warm) (approx. 180ml)
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Instant Activated Yeast
  • ½ tsp Baking Powder
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and baking powder.
  • Add warm milk and oil, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. (You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook.)
  • Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces.
  • Roll each piece into an oval (about 4–5 inches long).
  • Place a small piece of parchment paper on one half of the oval, then fold over to form a half-moon shape.
  • Transfer shaped buns onto small squares of parchment paper.
  • Cover and let rest for 30 minutes until slightly puffy.
  • Prepare a steamer with boiling water.
  • Steam buns (on their parchment squares) for 8–10 minutes until fluffy and cooked through.
  • Turn off the heat and leave the lid on for 2 minutes before opening (this prevents them from collapsing).
  • Gently separate the folded buns.
  • Fill with braised pork belly, fried chicken, crispy tofu, pickled vegetables, or whatever you like!
